That means we could be in for a memorable Monday night. MEXICO CITY -- They traveled the world, crisscrossing the globe to spread a brand new game of baseball to fans new and old. There was music, there was food, and there were so many home runs. On Saturday at Mexico City's legendary Campo Marte, the Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs, and... Major League Baseball is headed into its final weekend before the All-Star break, and that means it’s almost time for All-Star week festivities in Denver, Colorado at Coors Field. Of course there is the game itself, but that is preceded by the always popular Home Run Derby.
The event drew the attention of former MLB players as well, with CC Sabathia and Dexter Fowler watching from just behind the stage. MLB's 2021 Home Run Derby is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. It lasts three rounds, with eight MLB players slugging it out in a bracket-style competition until a champion is crowned. Only one player has won the derby three times, and that would be Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr., who won the second of his three crowns in Coors Field back in 1998. He went on to win the next year at Fenway Park for his second straight title — the first of two players to win in back-to-back years.

Once again, Mancini looked comfortable, drilling eight homers in the first minute, including a 490-foot drive that secured one minute of bonus time. He would go on to add shots of 485, 488, 481 and 475 while reaching 16 in regulation. Mancini started hot in bonus time and while he hit a rut in the final 40 seconds or so, one final blast at the buzzer got him to 22. He finished regulation with 17 homers and easily earned a minute of bonus time with four 475-plus foot clouts. Alonso took care of the remaining dingers in short order, homering on all six of his bonus-time swings to put his second straight Home Run Derby title on ice.
Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. The field of players selected currently consists of four American League players and four National League players. The first Derby in 1985 featured five from each league, and the 1986 and 1987 events featured three and two players from each league, respectively.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. gave a more political response, saying he didn’t want to risk flaring up the wrist injury that plagued him back in May. He also holds the record for the most Home Run Derby wins overall, sitting at three, including 1998 and 1999 when he became the first player to win the event in back-to-back years. From 2005 to 2013, a gold ball has been used once a player reaches nine outs (in 2014 when the T-Mobile Ball came into play, six; since 2015, during the final minute).

In 2000, a "match play"-style format was instituted for the second round. The player with the most home runs in the first round faced the player with the least among the four qualifying players, as did the players with the second- and third-most totals. The contestant who won each matchup advanced to the finals. This format was discontinued after the 2003 competition. The event has grown significantly from its roots in the 1980s, when it was not televised.
Prior to 1991, the Home Run Derby was structured as a two-inning event with each player receiving five outs per inning, allowing for the possibility of ties. It is now one of the most-watched events broadcast on ESPN. As the event traditionally takes place at sunset where the sun is of no factor to the batter, they can choose to wear their hat casually and backwards. It will be the second-to-last event of the All-Star week activities, with the midsummer classic itself obviously being the final act.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke the first-round record in 2019 with 29 home runs. He broke that record in the following round, hitting 40 home runs in 2 tiebreakers. The previous overall record was set in 2016 by Giancarlo Stanton, who finished with a total of 61 home runs, defeating Todd Frazier in the final round. The current overall record is held by Guerrero Jr. at a mark of 91, set in 2019.

ESPN is broadcasting the Derby itself, but MLB Network and Baseball Tonight will offer coverage before the event starts.
