That was a daunting target (just one shy of Alonso’s final round record of 23 back in 2019), but the Polar Bear’s first swing -- a 111 mph, 509-foot shot toward the left-field concourse -- erased any sign of nerves. Some notable performances in the Derby include Bobby Abreu in 2005, who won the Derby with a then-record 41 homers, including a then-record 24 in the first round.

Once again, Mancini looked comfortable, drilling eight homers in the first minute, including a 490-foot drive that secured one minute of bonus time. He would go on to add shots of 485, 488, 481 and 475 while reaching 16 in regulation. Mancini started hot in bonus time and while he hit a rut in the final 40 seconds or so, one final blast at the buzzer got him to 22. He finished regulation with 17 homers and easily earned a minute of bonus time with four 475-plus foot clouts. Alonso took care of the remaining dingers in short order, homering on all six of his bonus-time swings to put his second straight Home Run Derby title on ice.

Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. In case of a tie, the contestants get one additional minute. If there still is a tie, each contestant gets three swings, and repeats on ties thereafter. Speaking of the format, it's a single-elimination tournament. Each contestant has three minutes in the first and second rounds to hit as many home runs as he can. Players can also receive bonus time based on home run distance. Each batter gets one one 45-second timeout in each of the regulation periods (i.e., not during any bonus time that's added on).
Major League Basebal's 2022 Home Run Derby is set for Monday night at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium. Headlining the eight-slugger field is New York Mets star Pete Alonso, who is trying to become the first hitter ever to win three consecutive MLB Home Run Derbies (only Ken Griffey Jr. has three total Derby wins).
