After pumping up the crowd, Alonso stepped back in and walloped two majestic homers to easily defeat Soto -- and then he kept swinging, not knowing that he could stop. Alonso made this look positively easy through the first two rounds, and set himself up for a shot at back-to-back Derby titles in the final against Mancini. The full field of eight competitors for baseball’s big fly bonanza was a powerhouse group, but only one man could come out on top -- Pete Alonso, for his second straight win. The inspiration for the event was a 1960 TV series called Home Run Derby. The televised event included baseball legends Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays. The show ran for 26 episodes with the winner receiving $2,000.

The 2021 Home Run Derby field features some of the best sluggers in the game today. The dimensions at Coors Field are 347 feet to left field, 390 feet to left-center, 415 feet to center, 375 feet to right-center and 350 feet to right. LOS ANGELES -- There was no three-Pete in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby.
MLB’s 2022 Home Run Derby Field Is Set
It started to show, especially after the first minute, when Soto popped six dingers. At one point, Soto hit just one homer in the span of 13 swings, and while he recovered a bit, he finished regulation with only eight. Still, a 481-foot rocket meant Soto got a full, one-minute bonus period and took advantage with another seven to at least make Alonso work a bit. A favorite coming into the night and a heavy favorite after his seemingly effortless 51 homers across the first two rounds, Alonso remained serene on the staging couch as he watched Trey Mancini put up 22 dingers. That was a daunting target (just one shy of Alonso’s final round record of 23 back in 2019), but the Polar Bear’s first swing -- a 111 mph, 509-foot shot toward the left-field concourse -- erased any sign of nerves. Some notable performances in the Derby include Bobby Abreu in 2005, who won the Derby with a then-record 41 homers, including a then-record 24 in the first round.

Past Home Run Derby champions
Shohei Ohtani, an All-Star both at the plate and on the mound, is set to step into the national spotlight for those yet to see him bash high-towering home runs on a nightly basis out West. LOS ANGELES -- It was a homecoming of sorts for Rangers shortstop Corey Seager, as the former Dodgers slugger was received warmly by the crowd at Dodger Stadium on Monday night for the T-Mobile Home Run Derby.... Once again, Mancini looked comfortable, drilling eight homers in the first minute, including a 490-foot drive that secured one minute of bonus time. He would go on to add shots of 485, 488, 481 and 475 while reaching 16 in regulation. Mancini started hot in bonus time and while he hit a rut in the final 40 seconds or so, one final blast at the buzzer got him to 22. He finished regulation with 17 homers and easily earned a minute of bonus time with four 475-plus foot clouts. Alonso took care of the remaining dingers in short order, homering on all six of his bonus-time swings to put his second straight Home Run Derby title on ice.
Home Run Derby: How to watch, channel, streaming, start time
Unfortunately, the derby and a skills competition were canceled due to rain. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. The field of players selected currently consists of four American League players and four National League players. The first Derby in 1985 featured five from each league, and the 1986 and 1987 events featured three and two players from each league, respectively.
Delivery times may vary, especially during peak periods. Cleared payment cleared payment - opens in a new window or tab. Alonso continued to make it look as if he could do the Derby in his sleep, reaching 12 taters and repeatedly drawing ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ from the Coors Field crowd before he took his timeout with 36 seconds left in regulation. An extended timeout and a hilarious hit-by-pitch from Alonso’s BP pitcher, Mets bench coach Dave Jauss, hardly broke Alonso’s concentration. In honor of the World Baseball Classic, the 2005 contest featured eight players from different countries. For the first time in Derby history, Shohei Ohtani became both the first pitcher and the first Japanese player to participate in 2021.
Going first in his matchup with Alonso, Mancini surely knew he needed a big number in the two-minute round to stand a chance. Because of the game's TV popularity, invited players have felt pressure to participate. Notably, Ken Griffey Jr. initially quietly declined to take part in 1998, partly due to ESPN scheduling the Mariners in their late Sunday game the night before. After a discussion with ESPN's Joe Morgan and another with Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, Griffey changed his mind, and then won the Derby at Coors Field.
In case of a tie, the contestants get one additional minute. If there still is a tie, each contestant gets three swings, and repeats on ties thereafter. Speaking of the format, it's a single-elimination tournament. Each contestant has three minutes in the first and second rounds to hit as many home runs as he can. Players can also receive bonus time based on home run distance. Each batter gets one one 45-second timeout in each of the regulation periods (i.e., not during any bonus time that's added on).
Major League Basebal's 2022 Home Run Derby is set for Monday night at Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium. Headlining the eight-slugger field is New York Mets star Pete Alonso, who is trying to become the first hitter ever to win three consecutive MLB Home Run Derbies (only Ken Griffey Jr. has three total Derby wins). Alonso prevailed in 2019 and last year (no All-Star events were held in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic). The winners of the semifinals will then clash to decide the 2021 Home Run Derby champion. Live coverage of the Home Run Derby will start on Monday at 7 p.m.
In 1996, the field was again expanded to ten players, with five from each league (though in 1997, the AL had six contestants to the NL's four). Participants are seeded based on the number of home runs they've hit this season at the time the bracket was created on Wednesday. Ties are broken by 2020 home run totals, except in the case of Mancini and Alonso. Since Mancini didn't play in 2020, their 2019 totals were used as a tiebreaker. The very first season of FTX MLB Home Run Derby X is in the books.
